      Abstract:
The following essay provides a look into the role of the unconscious in the protagonist’s process of remembering in W.G. Sebald’s novel, Austerlitz. It aims to show that objects and places can reveal more than the actual information to which they are a repository or the purpose they were designed to serve. Rather, they function as connectors to the hidden world of repressed experiences. Recurring with obstinacy in the protagonist’s path, such connectors both show the way and obscure the view toward that which makes the real end of the search, that which has been lost. Thus, they not only provide an Ariadne’s thread to the protagonist’s search for himself but also to the reader’s literary experience. Using some concepts drawn from psychoanalytical theory, this essay hopes to make a contribution toward enhancing that experience.

      • Die Entstehung von der Endstellung des finiten Verbs in deutschen Nebensätzen

        Abstract:
In this paper I try to explain why the verb comes at the end of German subordinate clauses.  I aim to show that this word order did not come from Latin, as was formerly believed, but rather is a native element of German.  As a means to this end, I trace morphological and syntactic developments within German, which show that it has gradually changed from a synthetic to a largely analytic language.

In its earlier stages, German had a more flexible word order.  This was made possible by inflectional endings, which indicate the syntactic relationships between words.  Due to features of German morphology, however, many of these endings disappeared, making syntactic relationships ambiguous.  In order to compensate for this loss, German developed analytic structures, which express syntactic relationships through free morphemes and word order.

This development had an impact on the structure of subordinate clauses.  In earlier stages of German, subordinate clauses differed from independent clauses in that their verb was in the subjunctive.  As German lost inflectional endings, however, the indicative and subjunctive verb forms often became identical.  This blurred the distinction between independent and subordinate clauses.  With the rise of analytic structures, however, and the increased importance of word order which came with it, the subject-object-verb word order was able to replace the former role of the subjunctive.  This syntax did not come from Latin, but rather is a relic of earlier stages of German, in which synthetic structures allowed for a greater freedom in word order.

          Abstract:
The following paper analyzes a very apparent connection that occurs in the movie “Die fetten Jahre sind vorbei”. Weingartner, the director, uses the leading characters’ jealousy, greed, love, and hatred to critique their political battle for self-righteousness. This paper observes the protagonists’ process of engaging in politics as activists, aiming to satisfy their ideals while discovering their personal satisfaction and political orientation. Their political activities and ideals either reflect or contradict their personal principles. The connection of these processes helps one understand and be critical about the motives of the main figures in the movie. This analysis will enable the reader to grasp a deeper level of understanding about the behavioral patterns of the protagonists, to what extent they are influenced by their political ideals, and through which methods the director portrays the protagonists.

            Abstract:
For this project, I have chosen to study the 1970s and 80s through the movie "My Brother Is An Only Child by Danielle Luchetti." The movie covers twenty years of turbulent Italian history, focusing also on the human and emotional relationships between the two brothers. This movie acts as a “laboratory” to analyze the people’s behavior in a specific context of crisis and opposition.

              Abstract:
In this paper I examined Christa Wolf’s portrayal of education in East Germany through a study of her book Der geteilte Himmel. The goal of education in the GDR was to create faithful socialist workers. Rita Seidel, the main character in Der geteilte Himmel, chose to study education in order to be with her boyfriend, Manfred, in the city. As she continued her socialist studies, her goal changed to forwarding socialism in the GDR. Additionally, through my research on education in the GDR, it becomes clear that teachers were valuable to the state; this is not portrayed in Wolf’s story. Rita’s family is disappointed in her decision to become a teacher and predicts failure. Lastly, I examined the subjects the students studied. In the GDR, students studied math, science, humanities and Russian. Wolf’s story has Rita study many of these same subjects, in addition to English; interestingly enough Russian is never referenced as a school subject.

                Abstract:
The following essay provides an in-depth analysis of the consecutive victories of the Socialist Party in Paris elections in 2001 and 2008. Socialist Bertrand Delanoë has served as mayor of Paris since 2001. This remarkable victory signaled a substantial change in the modern political history of Paris, for Delanoë took over the position after 24 years of domination by the political right. As the right became mired in allegations of corruption and in party divisions in 2001, Delanoë capitalized to push forth with a social and environmental platform characteristic of the left that proved to appeal to modern Parisian voters. In 2008, he was re-elected on a similar platform, further cementing the Socialist Party’s footprint in the city of Paris. Since Delanoë has been in office, Paris has witnessed the Vélib bike-sharing system, the construction of public housing in the city center, and new traffic regulations to ameliorate pollution levels and thus the quality of life in Paris. Investigating why and how the Socialist Party managed to come into office and remain in the Paris mayorship to further promote such arguably revolutionary policies is therefore of utmost importance to the present and future of the city of Paris.

                  Abstract:
This essay examines the theme of cynicism used by the Salvadoran author Horacio Castellanos Moya in El Asco,Insensatez y El Gran Masturbador. He uses this theme as a narrative strategy to reveal that nothing has changed politically or culturally in his country even after years of devastating civil war. Inside of this cynicism we can see two sub-themes, eroticism and violence, used as expressions of a political transition from civil war to the fractured post-civil war era in El Salvador. Castellanos Moya’s prose contains very few moments of optimism attempting to represent Central America in its raw form, focusing on the region’s violent past and present.

                    Abstract:
Wolfgang Staudte’s monumental film Die Mörder sind unter uns was the first film produced in post-WWII Germany. Staudte sets his film in Berlin, a city that has been utterly destroyed by war. In the film, he establishes a striking dichotomy between the two main characters, Dr. Mertens and Susanne. Staute uses cinematography and synecdoche to strengthen and further this dichotomy. These two perspectives, consequently representing two starkly different outlooks about the future of the city, construct Staudte’s dichotomy. Susanne has a positive post-war perspective and is accompanied by motifs of light and hope, while her counterpart, Dr. Mertens represents a negative outlook and is accompanied by shadowy motifs, leaning towards hopelessness. Staudte communicates through Susanne that love and compassion can rebuild and restore the city. As Susanne continues to faithfully love Dr. Mertens, despite his caustic outlook, we see the convergence of the dichotomy. The two perspectives become one hope for a new city.
