Le Rôle de la France dans la poudrière caucasienne

Author: Beckett et al, Kathleen
Abstract:
The following essay was written in response to the events that transpired in August
2008 between the Georgian and Russian governments. After a long history of tension
between the two governments concerning the two separatist provinces, Abkhazia and
South Ossetia, open conflict erupted causing great pressure on international leaders
to find a solution. President Nicholas Sarkozy is under particular scrutiny due to
France’s possession of the European Union presidency. In the aftermath of the conflict
this essay examines three main concerns in continuing to work with the two governments:
energy, economy, and power politics. The dependency of Georgia and Russia has caused
a long standing idea of Russian power over the region. Current assessments show that
this power Russia holds is important worldwide in the international scene, and leaders
are evaluating how to ensure Russian power does not become too strong. Through the
history of the relationship between Russia and Georgia and the current actions of
international leaders a path for further action is presented.

Una cartografía interior: El espacio geográfico y las distancias en la novela Ucrania
Read full article
Author: Mickey, Jett
Abstract:
In my essay titled, Una cartografía interior: El espacio geográfico y las distancias
en la novela Ucrania, I explore the way the author, Pablo Aranda, uses a geographical
discourse to create a metaphor for the interior self. I also show how he ruptures
and collapses different forms of distance, be it geographical, emotional, or temporal
throughout the book in an effort to connect not only the characters, but also the
reader to the book as well.
The first part of my essay looks at the means of communication in the novel, and how
they are bridges of geographical space. I then take a more analytical approach to
these various media, and show how they are in fact underlined by tones of emotional
distance between the characters. This would show that though we have been able to
breach the gap in a physical distance, emotional and interior gaps or distances still
separate us.
In the second part of my essay, I show how the book in itself becomes a physical manifestation
of what the author characterizes as life, of as he calls it, a travel itinerary.
I show how his use of different points of views, time, and his writing in stream of
consciousness, or “interior monologue”, are in themselves different characteristics
of life and are all necessary for one to understand the identity of the self. In
this case, these different characteristics make up the book’s own identity.

The works of Excilia Saldaña focus on the idea of cultural memory in her life and
also in the lives of other Afro-Cuban women. The idea of cultural memory can be explained
as a group of people with a shared history and a shared cultural identification. .
To express her ideas about cultural memory, Saldaña uses works that are based in history.
In her works La Noche, Mi Nombre y Monologo de la esposa the reader can understand
the World of Afro-Cuban women and how the world changes them. The works Excilia Saldaña
are autobiographical and because of this she i sable to provoke real feelings about
the history of the black women and the Afro-Cuban culture. Saldaña focuses on the
idea of cultural memory with the definition of her self-identity in relation to national
history, the mystical, the personal and the family with a foundation in the relationships
between grandmothers and her grandchildren. In all of her works the reader is able

Napoleon in Deutschland

Abstract:
My paper is a detailed look at the effects of the Napoleonic Invasion of Germany and
how the ideas of democracy and liberty from the French Revolution were ‘exported’
to Germany through Napoleon.
In ‘Napoleon in Deutschland’ I pursued to connect the historic events during the Napoleonic
Occupation in Germany and the present of German Unity. Additionally, I explored how
the ideals of the French Revolution such as Democracy and Liberty were ironically
brought to Germany by Napoleon and his Army.
Lastly, since most of the time when Napoleon is mentioned he is associated with dictatorship
and oppression, I tried to portray Napoleon in this paper as the main contributor
for German Unity, which as is discovered through history, was never easy. Thanks to
Napoleon, Germans united to fight against his oppression and driven by a growing nationalism
finally formed the ground basis for the modern Germany.

“Das Leben Johann Wolfgang von Goethes und die Figur des Todes in “Totentanz” und
“Erlkönig”: Ein Biographischer Ansatz”

Author: Walker, Timothy
Abstract:
In this paper, I examine two poems by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: “Totentanz” and
“Erlkönig.” Specifically, I want to understand the figure of death, as it appears
in these two poems. I also want to reconcile the poetic texts to the life of Goethe.
It is evident the lives of writers are wrapped up in their work; therefore, I want
to understand Goethe’s perspective on death as he portrays the figure of death in
his poems. In Goethe’s poem “Totentanz,” he portrays death as a skeletal figure that
has risen from the dead. Goethe, however, did not only have fear for physical death,
but, as demonstrated in “Erlkönig,” he also feared death in life, or a life wasted.
